BCI Pathology Services

Overview

BCI/CRUK Pathology Facility is part of CRUK City of London Centre and is aim is to support cancer research in the CRUK City of London Centre at the BCI by offering a full range of histological techniques.
As a core facility, we can can also provide a service to others outside the CRUK Centre, other QMUL Centres and to external users if we have the capacity.

Note that BCI and CoLC researchers are the priority over others users.

Key Services

• Frozen tissue samples - processing and cutting of sections.

• Microtomy: Section cutting from standard (FFPE or PFEF) or mega-blocks, on Palm/LCM membrane slides, standard or adhesive/positively charged slides at various thickness (usually from 3 to 10 microns, standard being at 4 microns)

• Tissue processing by automation and embedding into paraffin blocks: Formalin fixed tissue (FFPE) only. 

• Automated Immunohistochemistry (IHC) singleplex or multiplexing staining of frozen or paraffin embedden sections using Ventana Discovery ULTRA or XT instruments.

•  Tissue Microarray (TMA): TMA constructed by user by a technician from the facility as a service.

• Staining:

1. Haematoxylin & Eosin (H&E) staining of frozen and paraffin sections by automation.
2. Special stains:  Sirius Red, AB/PAS, PAS, DPAS, Masson Trichrome, Elastic Van Gieson (Miller), MSB, Retic, Perl's.  

• Visium Spatial slides:

1. section from standard FFPE (formalin fixed paraffin embedded), 5 or 10 microns,
2. section from frozen samples, 10 microns,

Advice

As well as providing a high quality service, we offer advice on existing procedures.
We are also open to collaborations on developing new procedures and techniques, so please get in touch about any potential new projects.
